GENE EXPRESSION
AIMS AND SCOPE
The Molecular and Cellular Biology area of Gene Expression covers all aspects of the gene including it structure, functions, and regulation in prokaryotes, eukaryotes, and viruses; molecular and cell biological aspects of cell growth and development, chromatin structure and function. These include topics such as DNA replication, DNA repair, gene transcription, transcriptional control, RNA processing, posttranscriptional control, oncogenes, molecular mechanisms of action of hormones, molecular mechanism of cellular differentiation, growth and development, protein synthesis, and posttranslational control.
The Molecular and Cellular Neuroscience area of Gene Expression covers all aspects of gene expression as described but is devoted exclusively to the nervous system in health and disease. Topics include studies of neurogenesis, development, aging, and neurodegeneration. Complex neural systems, motor control, special senses, and higher cortical function, when viewed from the perspective of gene expression, are appropriate for the journal. Research related to molecular mechanisms of drug tolerance, dependence, and withdrawal are solicited. Manuscripts on state-of-the-art methods and protocols for molecular profiling of neuronal structure and function are welcome.

INSTRUCTIONS TO CONTRIBUTORS
Submission of Manuscripts: Only papers presenting original research that have not been previously published in any form will be accepted for publication. It is understood that a paper accepted for publication in Gene Expression will not be published elsewhere in any form without written consent of the publisher.
Preparation of Manuscripts: Authors are encouraged to submit the original and revised (if necessary) versions of the manuscript electronically via email to the appropriate office listed above. The text portion of the manuscript as well as the figures should be sent as an email attachment in PDF format. [If the paper is accepted for publication, the author(s) must provide two hard copies of the manuscript, two high-quality copies of all artwork, and a computer disk or a CD with the text portion in Microsoft Word. See Final Accepted Manuscript/Disk below.]
Include a cover letter, and insert Gene Expression in the subject line of the email. The cover letter should contain the name, address, telephone and fax numbers, and electronic mail address of the author responsible for correspondence. The entire manuscript (including Acknowledgements, References, Legends, Tables, and Permissions) should be double-spaced with at least 2.5-cm (1-in.) margins on top, bottom, and sides.
Arrange the manuscript in the following sequence: Title Page, Abstract and Keywords, Introduction, Materials and Methods, Results, Discussion, Acknowledgements, References, Figure Legends, Tables.
Title Page: The title page should include a descriptive title, along with first and last name, department and institution affiliation, and complete address for each author. Authors' present address should be indicated as a footnote. This page should contain the telephone number, fax number, and e-mail address of the author to whom all correspondence should be sent. An abbreviated title not exceeding 45 characters should also be provided.
Abstract and Keywords: Include an abstract (maximum 300 words) typed on a separate page. It should cover the main points of the article so that the reader may quickly obtain a general view of what is contained in the article. Keywords for indexing should be provided on the same page as the Abstract.
Materials and Methods: This section should be written with sufficient detail and clarity so that other investigators would be able to reproduce the data presented in the paper. Please provide (a) references to the research techniques used, (b) correct chemical names, (c) strains of organisms, plasmids, reagents, etc., and (d) names and addresses of suppliers of uncommon reagents or instruments.
Tables: Tables should be numbered and cited sequentially in the text. Prepare each table as a separate page at the end of the manuscript text, after the references. Avoid very wide or long tables that would not fit a printed page. Each table should have a title, and each column in the table should have a brief heading. Define all abbreviations in the table footnote at the bottom of the table.
Figures/Illustrations: Figures should be numbered and cited sequentially in the text. Prepare figures to provide high-quality hard copy output for final accepted submission (see Final Accepted Manuscript). Avoid light lettering and shading that will not reproduce well. Figure dimensions and scaling should be suitable for reduction (if necessary) to fit column or page size. Care must be taken that letters and other symbols do not become so small that they are illegible when the figure is reduced. Complex formulas should be prepared as illustrations. (Do not embed figures within the manuscript text.) The author is required to bear the costs for the publication of color figures (costs and color authorization form will be provided at proof stage).
Figure Legends: List all figure legends sequentially on one or more pages at the end of the manuscript text, after the references, and identify all symbols used in the figures. The figure legend should be as clear as possible and should fully describe the contents of the figure. (Do not include the figure legend as part of the figure). If the figure is from a previously published article, indicate that permission has been obtained from the original publisher.
Acknowledgements and Permissions: Acknowledgements should be brief and appear before the reference list. Acknowledgements to individuals should precede those to funding agencies. It is the responsibility of the author(s) to obtain permission to reproduce previously published material. Provide proof that permission has been granted from the original publisher and indicate the source.
References: References should include only published documents or those that are in press. Cite unpublished data in the text with first initials and surnames of all sources. Use the numbered alphabetical style. References within the text should be cited using numbers in parentheses. References at the end of the text are to be numbered references listed alphabetically, using the following format:

Final Accepted Manuscript/Disk: When the manuscript is accepted for publication, the author(s) must provide two hard copies of the manuscript, two high-quality copies of all artwork (glossy paper is necessary for photomicrographs and color figures), and a CD or disk. Ensure that the hard copy and electronic file match exactly. Photocopies or poor quality copies of figures are not acceptable. The final manuscript file (including tables and figure legends) must be submitted in IBM-compatible form, as a Microsoft Word document. A pdf file at this stage is not acceptable. Identify all figures on the back with figure number, first author's name, and indication of top of figure. Mail the final hard copy, figures, tables, and CD/disk to the appropriate address shown above
Page Proofs and Offprints: All material accepted from publication is subject to copyediting for publishing purposes. Authors will receive page proofs of articles before publication. Major revisions are not allowed at proof stage. An offprint order form will accompany the page proofs for ordering of offprints, pdf file, or full journal copies. Corresponding authors will receive a complimentary volume/year subscription.
