HABITATION
International Journal for Human Support Research
(Formerly Life Support and Biosphere Science)

AIMS AND SCOPE

Habitation, International Journal for Human Support Research, is designed to meet the needs of an emerging field of study necessitated by the need to develop new technologies to support human activities within controlled environments.

As mankind stretches the limits of environmental understanding in space, under the sea, and other harsh Earth environments, new lessons are leaned that affect our daily lives. Small spacecraft and submarines have used physical/chemical measures to recycle clean air and fresh water, and the principles of these small, unforgiving systems are directly applicable to understanding life support on Earth. As plants are added and systems become larger and more complex, basic concepts of cycling of elements and the importance of biodiversity have direct implications for issues of global warming, the protection of endangered species, and clean water requirements.

Habitation provides a peer-reviewed forum for sharing these concepts among diverse groups. The journal will meet the needs of collaborating scientists, interested in the development of advanced habitation systems for humans living in isolated and extreme environments.

Focus areas include, but are not limited to, the following areas: Monitoring and Control, Human Life Support, and Human Factors and Ergonomics.

INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically (see Electronic Submissions below), including all figures and tables to: Harry W. Janes, Rutgers University, 59 Dudley Road, Cook Campus, New Brunswick, NJ 08901. Phone: 732-932-8978, Ext. 243; Fax: 732-932-9441; Email: Janes@aesop.ruitgers.edu

Submitted papers must include a cover letter (as an additional attachment, or in the body of the Email) indicating that the manuscript is original, has not been published previously, is not under consideration elsewhere, and that the final version has been seen and approved by all authors.

The average article should contain 6 to 10 manuscript pages of text (approximately 1500 to 2500 words), not including title page, abstract, figures, tables, references, etc. Comprehensive reviews may run to 12 pages of text. Manuscripts longer than 14 pages are rarely accepted. Manuscripts should conform to the CBE Style Manual. The following guidelines provide additional information that will aid you in preparing a manuscript for Habitation.

Preparation of Manuscript: Manuscripts should be typed in English on 8 1/2 by 11-inch paper with 1 1/2 to 2-inch margins. Use double spacing throughout with two returns between paragraphs and after all elements (e.g., title, headings). Arrange in the following sequence: title page, abstract and keywords, text, acknowledgements, biographical sketches, references, figure legends, and tables. Begin each new component on a separate page and number all pages.

Title Page: Provide the article title and each author's name and corresponding complete address. Indicate the author to whom correspondence should be addressed, with complete mailing address, and include phone and fax numbers and email address.

Abstract and Keywords: Include an abstract of 50 to 150 words. It should be factual, not descriptive, giving the main points of the article. Provide four to six keywords appropriate for indexing.

Acknowledgements: Provide acknowledgement of funding or individual support at the end of the text.

Biographical Sketches: Include a brief, one-paragraph sketch for each author. Succinctly summarize each author's training/education and current position.

References: Cite references in the text with numbers in parentheses. Arrange the reference list in numbered alphabetical order, using journal abbreviations according to Index Medicus. Do not exceed 35 references. Emphasize recent references (past 5 years). In general, avoid references that are older than 10 years. Cite only published or in press material. Cite personal communication or submitted material as a parenthetical within the text. Follow the samples for reference style:

Journal Article: 1. Schneegurt, M. A.; Sherman, L. A. CELSS-3D: A broad computer model stimulating a controlled ecological life support system. Life Support Biosphere Sci. 4:3-20; 1997.

Book Chapter: Norman, J. M. Scaling process between leaf and canopy level. In: Ehlering, J. R.; Field, C. B., eds. Scaling physiological processes: Leaf to globe. San Diego: Academic Press; 1993:41-76.

Technical Report/Memorandum: Wieland, P. O. Designing for human presence in space: An introduction to environmental control and life support systems. NASA Reference Publication 1324. Marshall Space Flight Center, AL; 1994.

Figures: All figures should be prepared in a program that allows saving in .tif or .eps format, if possible. (Do not incorporate figures within the text of the manuscript.) Black and white line art (i.e., bar graphs, etc.) should be prepared without color unless the figure is to be printed in color. (Note there is a charge for printing figures in color). Labeling and figure detail should be large enough to be legible after reduction to fit page parameters. Each figure must be cited in the text and legends for all illustrations should be included on a separate page. (Do not incorporate figure legends as part of the figure and figure file.) Place figure legend text at the end of the manuscript file. Include figure (graphic) files as separate attachment files.

Tables: Table material should not duplicate the text. Include each table on a separate page at the end of the manuscript or as separate files. Include a title for each table. (Do not incorporate tables within the text of the manuscript.)

Electronic Submissions: To speed the review process and ensure accuracy, all submissions should be made electronically, via email (Janes@aesop.rutgers.edu) using WORD for PC. Include figure (graphic) files as separate file attachments (do not incorporate graphics within the text document). Include table files if they are separate from the manuscript file. Keep a back-up copy of all files sent.

Final Accepted Manuscripts: If changes are necessary, reviewers will "Track Changes" electronically and send back to you via email. After required changes (if any) are made, a final hard copy of the revised manuscript, including all tables and figures, along with a disk containing all files (text, graphics, tables) should be mailed to the above address. (Make sure that the hard copy and disk file match exactly and contain the final version of the manuscript.) Label each figure in pencil on the back of the figure with author's name and figure number.

Copyright: Publications are copyrighted for the protection of the authors and the publisher, but does not relinquish the author's propritary rights. A Transfer of Copyright Agreement will be sent to the author whose manuscript is accepted. The form must be completed and returned to the Editorial Office before the article can be published.

Page Proofs/Offprints: Page proofs and an offprint order form will be sent to the designated corresponding author before publication. Only minor corrections are allowed at this stage. Offprints and copies of the Journal can be ordered on the offprint form.
