LIFE SUPPORT & BIOSPHERE SCIENCE
AIMS AND SCOPE
Life Support & Biosphere Science International Journal of Earth/Space is designed to meet the needs of an emerging field of study necessitated by the innate human interest in exploration. As mankind stretches the limits of environmental understanding in space, under the sea, and in harsh Earth environments, new lessons are learned that affect our daily travels on spaceship Earth. Small spacecraft and submarines have used physical/chemical measures to recycle clean air and fresh water, and the principles of these small, unforgiving systems are directly applicable to understanding life support on Earth. As plants are added and biospheric systems become larger, basic concepts of cycling of elements and the importance of biodiversity have direct implications for issues of global warming, the protection of endangered species, and clean water requirements. Life Support & Biosphere Science provides a forum for sharing of these concepts among diverse groups, bringing the issues of Earth in touch with the issues of space. The forum will include the written word as a spectrum from news and event summaries to peer-reviewed technical articles. The Journal will meet the needs of Life Support and Biospheric Scientists, those interested in the design and manufacture of air and water systems, and those entrusted with the responsibility for educating the public while entertaining them.
INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
The chief objective of Life Support & Biosphere Science is to provide a scholarly forum for the sharing of ideas and information from the interrelated disciplines of life support and biospherics.
Manuscripts should be submitted electronically (see below), including all figures and tables, to:
Harry W. Janes, Director
NJ EcoComplex/NJ-NSCORT Foran Hall

Email: Janes@aesop.rutgers.edu
Submissions: riben@aesop.rutgers.edu
Submitted papers must include a cover letter (as an additional attachment, or in the body of the Email) indicating that the manuscript is original, has not been published previously, is not under consideration elsewhere, and that the final version has been seen and approved by all authors.
The average article should contain 6 to 10 manuscript pages of text (approximately 1500 to 2500 words), not including title page, abstract, figures, tables, references, etc. Comprehensive reviews may run to 12 pages of text. Manuscripts longer than 14 pages are rarely accepted. Manuscripts should conform to the CBE Style Manual. The following guidelines provide additional information that will aid you in preparing a manuscript for Life Support & Biosphere Science.
Preparation of Manuscript: Manuscripts should be typed in English on 8 1/2 to 11-inch paper with 1 1/2 to 2-inch margins. Use double spacing throughout with two returns between paragraphs and after all elements (e.g., title, headings). Arrange in the following sequence: title page, abstract and keywords, text, acknowledgements, biographical sketches, references, figure legends, and tables. Begin each new component on a separate page and number all pages.
Title Page: Provide the article title and each author's name and corresponding complete address. Indicate the author to whom correspondence should be addressed, with complete mailing address, and include phone and fax numbers and email address (if available).
Abstract and Keywords: Include an abstract of 50 to 150 words. It should be factual, not descriptive, giving the main points of the article. Provide four to six keywords appropriate for indexing.
Acknowledgements: Provide acknowledgement of funding or individual support at the end of the text.
Biographical Sketches: Include a brief, one-paragraph sketch for each author. Succinctly summarize each author's training/education and current position.
References: Cite references in the text with numbers in parentheses. Arrange the reference list in numbered alphabetical order, using journal abbreviations according to Index Medicus. Do not exceed 35 references. Emphasize recent references (past 5 years). In general, avoid references that are older than 10 years. Cite only published or in press material. Cite personal communication or submitted material as a parenthetical within the text. Follow the samples for reference style:

Figures: Provide clear, black and white camera-ready copies of all art work. Labeling should be large enough to be legible after reduction to fit page parameters. Label each figure, in pencil, on the back with the first author's name, figure number, and indicate the top of the figure. Each figure must be cited in the text and legends for all illustrations should be included on a separate sheet. Place figure legend text at the end of the file. Include figure (graphic) files as separate attachment files.
Tables: Table material should not duplicate the text. Include each table on a separate sheet (can be a aeparate file attachment or not) and include a title for each table.
Electronic Submissions: To speed the review process and ensure accuracy, all submissions should be made epectronically, via Email (riben@aesop.rutgers.edu) using WORD for PC. Any photographs that cannot be submitted via Email may be sent to the mailing address above. Include figure (graphic) files as separate file attachments (do not incoporate graphics within the tezxt document). Keep a back-up copy.
