TOURISM IN MARINE ENVIRONMENTS

AIMS AND SCOPE

Tourism in Marine Environments is an interdisciplinary journal dealing with a variety of management issues in marine settings. It is a scientific journal that draws upon the expertise of academics and practitioners from various disciplines related to the marine environment, including tourism, marine science, geography, social sciences, psychology, environmental studies, economics, marketing, and many more.

The marine environment has long been one of the most attractive settings for tourism. Marine tourism, as defined by Orams (Marine tourism: Development, impacts and management. Routledge; 1999, p. 9) includes ‘those recreational activities that involve travel away from one’s place of residence and which have as their host or focus the marine environment (where the marine environment is defined as those waters which are saline and tide-affected)’. Thus, it includes a wide spectrum of activities, such as scuba diving and snorkeling, wind surfing, fishing, observing marine mammals and birds, the cruise ship and ferry industry, all beach activities, sea kayaking, visits to fishing villages and lighthouses, maritime museums, sailing and motor yachting, maritime events, Arctic and Antarctic tourism, and many more.

Tourism in Marine Environments aims to contribute to the process of theory building, and to be the leading source for research reports and analysis related to all forms of marine tourism. It is governed by an international editorial board consisting of experts in marine tourism, marine science, and related fields. This board conducts most of the manuscript reviews and therefore plays a large role in setting the standards for research and publication in the field. The Editor-In-Chief receives and processes all manuscripts, from time to time modifies the editorial board, and works to ensure a continuous improvement in quality.

INFORMATION FOR CONTRIBUTORS

To expedite the review process, all manuscripts submitted to Tourism in Marine Environments (TIME) must be prepared according to the following format.

Send manuscripts to the Editor-in-Chief:  Michael Lück, Associate Professor, School of Hospitality and Tourism, Faculty of Applied Humanities, AUT University, Private Bag 92006, Auckland, New Zealand. Tel: +64  9-917-9999, ext. 5833; Fax: +64 9-917-9962; E-mail: micha.lueck@aut.ac.nz

Manuscript Submission: Authors are encouraged to submit manuscripts by e-mail (attachment in Word format). Hardcopy manuscripts must be submitted in quadruplicate. They should be typewritten on one side of the paper, double spaced (including references), and should be checked carefully. All rights and permissions must be obtained by the contributor(s). These permissions should be sent upon acceptance of the manuscript for publication.

Writing Style: The paper must be written in the third person and all submissions must be in English. Readers need to grasp information quickly; thus, authors should use straightforward declarative sentences, making every effort to help readers understand the concepts presented. All articles should be comprehensible to all readers, regardless of their areas of specializations and academic backgrounds. Papers may include tables, drawings, charts, or photographs.

Paper Length: Articles should be limited to 5,000-7,000 words. Each figure and table counts for approximately 300 words. Book Reviews, Commentaries, and Research Notes should be between 600 and 1,200 words in length.

Cover Page: This should bear a short informative title (title/subtitle 50 letters maximum). To facilitate blind review, no names or affiliations appear on the cover page.

Title Page: The article title is repeated on the title page, followed by all authors' names and affiliations. The corresponding author should be designated, with complete mailing address, as well as telephone and fax numbers, and e-mail address.

Abstracts and Keywords: The article abstract (between 110 and 120 words, including keywords) should state concisely what was done and why, what was found, and what was concluded, and end with a list of up to five keywords pertinent to the central theme.

Text: The paper itself will be composed of three parts: introduction, the study, and conclusion. Headed with an appropriate title, the study (or the main body of the paper) is in turn divided into subtitled sections. The whole submission should be arranged in the following order: cover sheet, title page, abstract and key words, introduction, the study, conclusion, acknowledgment, biographical note, reference list, figure captions, tables. Do not use text footnotes. Extra explanatory material can be included as an Appendix.

Biographical Note: A 65-word biosketch of the author(s) should be included. Manuscripts accepted for publication have to include a biographical sketch (current position, prior significant professional experience, technical interests, education, important activities, and professional affiliations) of all authors.

Abbreviations and Terminologies: These should be fully spelled out and defined when first used in the text.

References: In the text, references are cited using the author/date style following the APA Publication Manual (5th ed.). Examples: (Fennell, 1999) or (Duffus & Dearden, 1990; Hall, 2001, 2002). The reference list, placed at the end of the text, must be typed double-spaced in alphabetical order of authors. A referenced article should contain all authors' names, year of publication, title of the article, name of the publication, volume, and inclusive page numbers. A referenced book should list author name(s), year of publication, title of the book, place of publication, and publisher per the following examples:

Please note that citations such as "personal communication'' should not be included in the reference list, but may be added parenthetically in the text.

Figures: All figures should be prepared in a program that allows saving in .tif or .eps format. (Do not incorporate figures within the text of the manuscript.) Black and white line art (i.e., bar graphs, etc.) should be prepared without color unless the figure is to be printed in color. (Note there is a charge for printing figures in color). Labeling and figure detail should be large enough to be legible after reduction to fit page parameters. Each figure must be cited in the text and legends for all illustrations should be included on a separate page. (Do not incorporate figure legends as part of the figure and figure file.) Place figure legend text at the end of the manuscript file. Include figure (graphic) files as separate files on the final disk.

Tables: Table material should not duplicate the text. Include each table on a separate page at the end of the manuscript or as separate files. Include a title for each table. (Do not incorporate tables within the text of the manuscript.)

Final Accepted Manuscripts: A final hard copy of the revised manuscript, including all tables and figures, along with a disk containing all files (text, graphics, tables) should be mailed to the above address. (Make sure that the hard copy and disk file match exactly and contain the final version of the manuscript.) Label each figure in pencil on the back of the figure with author's name and figure number.

Commentary, Research Notes, and Book Reviews: TME also solicits submission to these Departments. The above general format applies; for any queries prospective contributors are asked to contact the respective Editor. In order to avoid unnecessary delays, please send submissions directly to the appropriate Editor.

Evaluation: TME is a refereed journal. All manuscripts are evaluated by at least two independent referees. The paper evaluation is double blind and anonymous: neither referees nor the authors are aware of each other's identities.

Copyright and Originality: All authors must sign the "Transfer of Copyright" agreement before the article can be published. This transfer agreement enables Cognizant Communication Corp. (CCC) to protect the copyrighted material for the authors, but does not relinquish the author's proprietary rights. The copyright transfer covers the exclusive rights to reproduce and distribute the article, including reprints, photographic reproductions, microfilm, or any other reproductions of similar nature and translations, as well as the right to adapt the article for use in conjunction with computer systems and programs, and reproduction of publication in machine-readable form and incorporation in retrieval systems. Authors are responsible for obtaining from the copyright holder permission to reproduce any material for which copyright exists.

Page Proofs/Offprints: Page proofs will be sent to the designated corresponding author before publication. Minor corrections only are allowed at this stage. An offprint order form will accompany the page proof.
